When winter strikes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, most of them can be traced back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself enough time to look through and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system may be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises near the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies could notice increased symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these indicators sound like what you are undergoing with your furnace, it could be time to start looking into a new system.
